Back running
I’ve been out for a few easy runs since my marathon and I’m feeling good.
There are days where I’m still wearing mitts and others where a short sleeve t-shirt feels too warm.
The scenery looks different every time I head out. The moody days tend to be challenging with the wind gusting up against me. The clouds make the world feel smaller. But I also see how beautiful the ocean is when there are large waves that crash against the sand. The conditions often look like rain but we don’t get a ton of moisture.
On warm, sunny days, Calais is stunning. The ocean is a totally different colour and the sand looks so inviting.
Running has made me more observant of my surroundings. It also takes me further into cities, onto side roads, down highways in new places where I likely wouldn’t go if I didn’t have to clock so many kilometers.
Runs sometimes end with baguettes and flowers.
Running has changed the way I travel and I’m really grateful for that.
On a whim, I decided to submit a first-person piece to the Globe and Mail about running while on vacation and they accepted it. You can find it online here and it will be in the print publication on Wednesday May 21. Indeed, early morning runs are the best way to spend a vacation.

Way to go!! This is exactly how how feel when I am on my bike, whether it be on the streets in foreign land, a northern forest or in a back alley in Saskatoon-you can see so much!
So happy for you, Leisha!!
Congrats on the globe article! I have definitely been struck, when running long distances on vacation, by the things I see that I wouldn’t have without running :) and how much smaller a city seems when trying to get in 20k!
